Founded in 1983, New Moms is a grass-roots agency that has served over one thousand teenage mothers and their children in Northwest Chicago.
Early 1980s – New Moms begins in Chicago’s greater Humboldt Park neighborhood. Founder operates program out of her apartment and car to help teenage mothers in crisis.
1983 – Officially incorporated as a 501(c)3 registered charity; official beginning of Community Outreach Program for at-risk teen moms (aged 13-21) and their children.
1983 – New Kids Enrichment Program implemented, serving children from birth-age 5.
1988 – New Moms opens a permanent supportive youth-based housing facility, our Cooperative Living Program, which serves teenage mothers (18-21) and their children (birth-age 5).
1992 – The State of Illinois chose New Moms as the shelter program model used by the Department of Children and Family Service in providing housing for pregnant and parenting wards-of-the-state.
1996 –The Ounce of Prevention Fund chose New Moms to create a pilot welfare-to-work program for pregnant/parenting teens—our Rising Star Career Readiness Program.1998 – Crown Financial selected New Moms as a national pilot site for career aptitude assessment materials.
1999 – New Moms featured in “A Heart for the City” master’s level college textbook on urban needs and programs.
2000 – New Moms featured in a national manual/video package highlighting model welfare-to-work programs in the United States.
2001 – New Moms received an award as an outstanding homeless shelter provider from the Apostolic Church of God on the south side of Chicago.
2003 – New Moms the subject of a documentary film by Regan Rohde.
2003 – New Moms opened the first Bright Space in Chicago. This play space in our supportive housing facility is part of a national initiative between Bright Horizons Foundation for Children and local homeless service providers.
2004 – The Illinois Department of Human Services awarded $129,000 to expand our Cooperative Living supportive housing program and enhance our Rising Star Program.
2006 – Moody Radio and Compassion International selected New Moms for an on-air “awareness-building campaign” to ensure that more Chicagoans hear about our agency.
2008 – Five New Moms Leadership Council members were honored by the 14th District Police Commander and Alderman Colon (of the 35th Ward) for their volunteer work with a domestic violence project.
2010 –Bright Endeavors, an eco-friendly social enterprise, becomes part of New Moms, Inc.
