Programs / Population Served

New Moms, Inc. serves homeless teen moms and their children, with the mothers ranging from the ages of 13 to 21. New Moms’ target neighborhoods of Humboldt Park, Logan Square and West Town have staggering annual birth rates – 29%, 20% and 19% respectively among adolescent girls ages 10 through 19. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there are between 1,200 and 1,700 births per year to teen moms in our three target communities -- an overwhelming 84% of all births. When these young women come to us, approximately 80% have dropped out of school. Only about 25% have ever held a job. Almost all are on welfare (multi-generational welfare recipients) or have no income at all. 100% are living in extreme poverty (50% or more below the poverty threshold.) 52% of our client moms are Hispanic; 45% are African-American; and 3% are Anglo.

The agency’s transitional living shelter serves homeless teen moms and their children from all of Chicago, while our community outreach programs serve the same population from the Humboldt Park, Logan Square and West Town neighborhoods of Chicago.
